These 6m crochet hexagons will form the basis of our Make a Beeline map which will plot participation.
MATERIALS:
4mm crochet hook
Small amount of yellow and black DK yarn
ABBREVIATIONS:
dc: UK term double crochet
sc: US term – single crochet equivalent to UK dc
sl st: slip stitch
SIZE IS IMPORTANT!
The completed hexagons must measure 6 cm as measured from the straight edges. If you find they are larger or smaller then try using a smaller or larger hook size.
METHOD:
With yellow yarn:
Round 1: Create a magic circle, work 6 dc (sc) into the ring. Join with a sl st and pull tight.
or
Round 1: Chain 2 and work 6 dc (sc) into the second chain from the hook. Join with a sl st.
NOTE: Chain 1 does not count as a stitch in the following rows. ie the first stitch is worked into the base of the chain 1.
Round 2: Chain 1 and work 2 dc (sc) into each stitch. Join with a sl st. (12 stitches)
Round 3: Chain 1 and * work 1 dc (sc) into first stitch. Work 2 dc (sc) into the next stitch. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with a sl st. (18 stitches)
Round 4: Chain 1 and * work 1 dc (sc) into first and second stitches. Work 2 dc (sc) into the next stitch. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with a sl st. (24 stitches)
Round 5: Chain 1 and * work 1 dc (sc) into first and next two stitches. Work 2 dc (sc) into the next stitch. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with a sl st as follows.
Continuing with the black yarn:
Round 6: Chain 1 and * work 1 dc (sc) into first and next three stitches. Work 2 dc (sc) into the next stitch. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with a sl st and fasten off leaving a long length of yarn ( about 20 cm (8 in) which will be used to sew the hexagons together.
After putting the hook through the first stitch of the round, join the black yarn to the yellow with a long tail and use it to complete the slip stitch. (30 stitches)
The yellow tails can be fastened and trimmed quite short as they will not be required to sew up.
